WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn issued the following statement on two significant Supreme Court rulings today:
“The future of our nation’s democracy was at the forefront of today’s U.S. Supreme Court rulings.
“The ruling in favor of partisan gerrymandering underscores the necessity of citizen participation in the electoral process. Stacking the deck for partisan gain is not ideal for democracy or the principle of one person, one vote. Most Americans believe in fairness and due process, but not enough are able to participate in the electoral process. This must change going forward or we will soon experience some backward lurches.
“The court’s ruling remanding the Trump Administration’s efforts to include a citizenship question on the Census underscores that this Constitutionally-mandated count of residents must be subjected to equity and fairness. Financial resources and political representation are not based on citizenship and the rhetoric around this question seem designed to strike fear in the immigrant community. We must be vocal and vigilant to ensure this Administration is not successful in suppressing Census participation.”
