WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today issued the following statement on House passage of H.R. 3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act:
“I applaud the work of the Homeland Security Committee Chair, Rep. Bennie Thompson, and the Ranking Member, Rep. John Katko, for their work to find common ground on this bipartisan bill. This legislation is about January 6th, and what is needed to secure this Capitol. The bipartisan commission created by this measure will find out what led to this insurrection and make recommendations about what we can do to prevent it from ever happening again.
“This is about preserving this great democracy. I often quote Alexis de Tocqueville, who said that what makes this country great is its ability to repair its faults. We saw fault lines open up leading to January 6th, and we know that something went wrong with the security of the Capitol building. I believe we have the ability to make needed repairs.
“This commission ought to be composed of members who understand what governance is all about and who have a good appreciation for the country and what we need to do to keep this country moving toward a more perfect union.”
