WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn discussed the Republican publicity stunt yesterday at the impeachment inquiry committee hearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Below is a link to the video and his remarks.
“On yesterday, what we saw was a misrepresentation of what is taking place up here. We have 109 members of these three committees, of that 109, 47 of them in the room every day are Republicans, with their counsel. They are participating. They get equal time to ask questions and to follow up with questions. So, this notion that we’re doing something in secret is just absolutely not true. It is in private, and that’s where you do fact finding. We are supposed to not just pursue the guilty, but we are to protect the innocent. You cannot do that in public view. It is shameful that they would be misrepresenting this process this way. We don’t know what goes on in a grand jury room because the grand jury is supposed to find out the facts, pursue the truth, make sure that the guilty is brought to justice, [and] also, in the process to protect all of those innocent people who may get besmirched along the way. That’s all that is going on here. It is shameful [that] they’re misrepresenting this, but I guess that’s the climate within which we now live.”
