WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement after the House passed the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act. This legislation invests in modernizing manufacturing, spurs American innovation through basic research and development and high risk/high reward clean energy research and strengthens math and science education to prepare students for the jobs of the 21stCentury.
“America has always led the way in technological innovation and in order to stay competitive in our rapidly growing world economy, we must continue to invest in innovation. We can’t afford to sit on the sidelines as other nations make critical investments to secure their economic future, which is why it is essential that we take control of our economic future by inventing, building and selling technology that will power the next century.
“The COMPETES Act keeps our nation on a path to double funding for basic scientific research, creates jobs with innovative technology loan guarantees for manufacturers and promotes high-risk reward research. This legislation also creates the next generation of entrepreneurs by improving science, math, technology and engineering education at all levels.
“While House Republicans continue to put special interests and political ambition before the interests of America’s students, small businesses and manufacturers, Democrats are committed to creating American jobs at home and keeping our nation the world’s leader in research and development. These homegrown, American jobs, will ensure future economic success.”
