WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement after a bipartisan group of members announced the DISCLOSE Act, legislation which will address the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC and ensure transparency and disclosure in our electoral process.
“The recent Supreme Court ruling overturned settled precedent and opened floodgates that will allow special interest money to overrun our elections and turn our democracy into a corpocracy. Special interests already have too much influence in Washington, and this ruling only strengthens their hand.
“The DISCLOSE Act will increase transparency and disclosure of political spending, prevent foreign companies from influencing America’s elections and ensure that entities that receive taxpayer money can’t turn around and spend money in elections. This act takes the necessary steps to protect our democracy from special interests and provides more information to the American people so they can make informed decisions on who is funding political expenditures. I’m pleased that Democrats and Republicans could come together to keep our elections fair and transparent, and protect our democracy.”
