WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which marks the historic triumph of the Mexican people over the French Army in the battle of Puebla in 1862.
“America’s strength is our diversity. Today I join my colleagues in celebrating Cinco de Mayo and rich culture, deep faith and closely-knit family traditions of the Hispanic community which have contributed to making America a great country. Hispanic Americans have been and continue to be an integral part of our Nation’s progress and prosperity, and their contributions span all sectors, from the military, to education, government, nonprofits, business and the arts.
“Democrats in Congress are committed to delivering a New Direction for America that ensures Hispanics realize the American dream. We’ve enacted health insurance reform which expands access to preventative care, fights health disparities and strengthens the focus on minority health issues. This law will make about 9 million additional Latino’s eligible for health coverage.
“Along with health reform law, The Democratic-led Congress enacted the Student and Fiscal Responsibility Act which makes college more affordable. This law increases the maximum Pell Grant and makes student loan repayments more affordable. It also strengthens Hispanic-serving Institutions so that students can stay in school, graduate and succeed in our global economy.”
