WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement on the April jobs report which stated that employment rose by 290,000 jobs in April, the largest increase in four years.
“Good news on the jobs front today—April’s job growth is the strongest in four years, and we saw better than previously reported jobs numbers in February and March. Optimism and confidence in the economy are growing as thousands of job-seekers who suspended their search under a struggling economy are returning to the job market to look for work. We will work to make this good news even better news in the coming months as we finish work on Wall Street reform and job creation legislation that strengthen and protect the middle class and Main street. While Republicans continue to push for the policies of the past that brought us the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and a loss of 8 million jobs.
“The impact of tax cuts for 95 percent of Americans and robust investment in our infrastructure under the Recovery Act is evident as you chart the jobs numbers since the beginning of last year—the economy begins steady growth when the Recovery Act took effect.
“In addition Congress recently passed and the President signed into law a measure that provides new incentives for small businesses to hire unemployed workers and to spur business growth and investment. And yesterday, the House passed the Homestar jobs bill that will create much needed jobs in the manufacturing and construction sectors by giving people rebates to upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes. These are just a few of the many steps that Democrats and President Obama will take in the coming weeks and months to build upon the improvements made to the economy.”
