ICYMI: Whip Emmer, Minnesota GOP Congressional Delegation correct the record on the Democrats’ Medicaid lies

In a new op-ed in Alpha News, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) joined his fellow Minnesota Republicans, Representatives Pete Stauber, Michelle Fischbach, and Brad Finstad, in setting the record straight on the One Big Beautiful Bill’s provisions related to Medicaid. The op-ed comes as Democrats in Minnesota and across America spread lies and stoke fear after Republicans in Washington united to pass the landmark legislation that will benefit every American.

In case you missed it…

Don’t believe the Democrats’ lies. Our One Big Beautiful Bill strengthens Medicaid for Minnesotans

On July 4th, President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill into law, delivering on the mandate 77 million Americans gave him in November. From securing our borders, to unleashing American energy, to preventing the largest tax hike in American history – this historic piece of legislation contains wins for every Minnesotan.

Yet the Democrats, fueled by their hatred for President Trump, have been on a fearmongering campaign about the contents of our bill – particularly when it comes to Medicaid.

According to Governor Tim Walz, our One Big Beautiful Bill will “tear health care away from a quarter million Minnesotans.” According to Senator Amy Klobuchar, “rural hospitals are roadkill” in the One Big Beautiful Bill. Even members of the Minnesota media have been perpetuating the Democrats’ lies.

But that’s exactly what these statements are: lies.

So we’re here to correct the record and arm Minnesotans with the facts.

The hard truth is that Minnesota’s Medicaid program has been riddled with waste, fraud, and abuse at the expense of hardworking taxpayers. Look no further than the recent uncovering of massive fraud within Minnesota’s Housing Stabilization Services Medicaid program. Or the 85 autism centers who are under investigation for potential Medicaid billing fraud. Or the $150 million in fines Minnesota taxpayers were forced to bankroll due to the state’s lack of oversight of Medicaid enrollment. Acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson recently stated that the state’s government fraud could exceed $1 billion – much of that in Medicaid fraud.

To put it succinctly: Minnesota has a Medicaid problem, and taxpayers are being forced to foot the bill.

While Democrat leaders in the state sit on the sidelines, our Republican trifecta in Washington signed provisions into law that address this very issue. The One Big Beautiful Bill contains policies that strengthen Medicaid for the Minnesotans who need it most while rooting out the waste, fraud, and abuse that exploded under the Biden administration. These policies include:

  • Preventing taxpayers from subsidizing health care for illegal aliens
  • Removing deceased recipients from the Medicaid rolls
  • Requiring states to conduct more frequent eligibility checks for the expansion population, ensuring that individuals are not enrolled in multiple states
  • Enacting commonsense work requirements for working-age, able-bodied Minnesotans – like the ones many Democrats supported during Bill Clinton’s presidency in 1996
  • Expanding access to Home and Community Based Services for low-income seniors and individuals living with a disability
  • Implementing a $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program to support rural hospitals

So the next time a Democrat posts a video claiming Republicans are ripping away health care benefits from disabled, young children – don’t believe them.

It’s nothing but lies to stoke fear and score political points.

These policies have been historically bipartisan and are wildly popular in Minnesota because Minnesotans have common sense. They can see through the Democrats' lies and understand how these policies will benefit them and their families.

The truth is simple. Nothing in our bill takes away health care from the very people Medicaid was intended to help such as single mothers, children, seniors, or the disabled.

The Medicaid provisions included in the One Big Beautiful Bill ensure our most vulnerable continue receiving the support they need, while restoring the integrity of the program and saving taxpayer dollars.

It’s a win for our communities, a win for our state, and a win for the entire country. The most appalling factor in all of this is that Democrats would rather spew lies than get on board.
