WASHINGTON, D.C.— House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) made the following statement after the House took historic action to reform our tax code for the first time in 31 years with the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:

“The House’s passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act today is a historic win for hard-working families who want to see more money in their pockets, and who want to see our economy get back on track. For the first time in 31 years, we are finally making our country competitive again so we can bring jobs back to America that have left, and we simplify the tax code so much that more than 90% of families will be able to fill out their taxes on a postcard.

“I’m tired of seeing our middle class evaporate as jobs move overseas and our economy remains stagnant. With this bill, that will finally change. We cut the corporate tax rate so we no longer have the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world. Our Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will increase wages and create nearly one million new jobs.

“Most importantly, hardworking middle-class families will see an average tax cut of $1,182, and see their wages rise by an average $2,500. For working families struggling to get by, this means a car payment, savings for a child’s college tuition, or money for a rainy day. We know hard-working families can spend their own money better than Washington bureaucrats, and this bill lets them keep more of what they earned.

“The American people elected Republican majorities in Congress and elected President Donald Trump to the White House to create jobs and get our economy moving, and this bill takes a huge step forward in keeping that promise by passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act through the House. Now, I’m encouraged that the Senate is taking action to do its job as well so we can then work out our differences and get this legislation on President Trump’s desk so we can finally deliver on the tax relief that families need and deserve.”
