WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today reacted to Senate Republicans unveiling their plan to address the need for police reforms. “I thank the Senate for joining the discussion and look forward to having honest conversations about what is necessary to ensure that African Americans are treated fairly and equitably by law enforcement officials in this country that pledges ‘liberty and justice for all.’ “Today, as we mark the 5th anniversary of the murders of nine Black parishioners at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston at the hands of a self-proclaimed white supremacist, I point all Americans to the contrast in the arrest of Dylann Roof, the perpetrator of that horrific crime, and the arrest of George Floyd. The white supremacist, who had just murdered nine people, was taken from his vehicle by police with their guns holstered and treated with dignity and respect. He was given water and taken to a Burger King before being taken to police headquarters and interrogated in a calm and civil manner. George Floyd, accused of passing a $20 counterfeit bill, was thrown to the ground, had his wrists handcuffed behind his back and lynched by a knee to the neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. “This is systemic. It is ingrained in the police culture and cannot be properly addressed by executive orders. “There must be real, meaningful reform. The full force of the federal government must be applied to ensure we do not have inequitable, inadequate, piecemeal solutions to a national crisis. “All those who are serious about making real change are welcome at the table. Let’s get to work because there is not a moment to lose.”
