WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Whip-elect, Congressman James E. Clyburn today joined Leaders from the House and Senate at a White House meeting with President Bush. Discussion at the meeting included Iraq and the President's recent travels abroad.

"International diplomacy and domestic civility must be our watchwords going forward in Iraq and here at home. As a father and a grandfather I can identify with the anxieties expressed my fellow Americans about how the decisions of the people around this table will impact our children and grandchildren.

"Mr. President, you mentioned that President Harry Truman's doctrine lacked broad acceptance at the time of its enunciation. So in the interest of bi-partisanship, I wish to mention that in preparation for my rise to the Chairmanship of the House Democratic Caucus, I read Doris Kearns Goodwin's, Team of Rivals, a book about the people Abraham Lincoln brought into his cabinet. Many of us would not be where we are today without the wisdom of Mr. Lincoln to bring his political rivals into his administration and counsel. We can learn from President Lincoln as we prepare for the beginning of a new Congress, with new leadership and the promise of a new tone in Congress which I hope will be led by civility and bipartisanship."
