WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn released the following statement today after learning of WellPoint’s decision to end the practice of rescissions ahead of schedule. This decision came after Congressional Democrats and the Obama Administration urged insurance companies to stop this practice.  WellPoint plans to end this practice May 1, 2010. “Thanks to the urging of Congressional Democrats and the Obama Administration, WellPoint will end, ahead of schedule, the shameful practice of rescissions.  I am hopeful that other insurance companies will follow their lead.   For far too long, insurance companies have been able to drop people from their coverage once they got sick, but the recently enacted health insurance reform legislation bans this practice.  I congratulate WellPoint for immediately ending the practice. “Unfortunately, Congressional Republicans are fighting to repeal the law and reverse the ban on rescissions and other reforms like allowing parents to keep their children on their policies until they are 26 years old, ending the denial of coverage for children based on preexisting conditions and closing the donut hole for seniors. We won’t let Congressional Republicans take back these benefits from the American people.”
