WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement on President Obama’s remarks at the White House on health insurance reform:
“Today the President called on Congress to move forward on health insurance reform with a plan that incorporates bipartisan solutions. Our country has struggled with this issue for three generations and Congress has debated every aspect of this issue for more than a year. Now is the time for action. We owe the American people an up-or-down vote on this issue.
“The President’s proposal merges Democratic and Republican ideas and stays true to the goal of increasing access and lowering costs. Families and small businesses will have greater control over their health care and those unable to afford it will receive tax credits for purchasing coverage. Insurance companies will no longer be allowed to discriminate based on preexisting conditions, drop their coverage if an insured gets sick or arbitrarily raise rates. This is also a fiscally responsible bill that will reduce the deficit.”
