H.R. 51 – Washington, D.C. Admission Act (Rep. Norton – Oversight and Reform)

The Rule provides for one hour of debate equally divided and controlled by the Chair and Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Reform.

This bill would admit the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth and reduce the geographical size of the federal district. The State would consist of 66 of the 68 square miles of the present-day federal district (D.C.).  The federal district would consist of the remaining two square miles, including the White House, the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, the principal federal monuments, and the federal buildings adjacent to the National Mall and the Capitol Building.

    This bill designates the Pulse Memorial in Orlando, Florida, as the “National Pulse Memorial” to honor the lives taken on June 12, 2016, as well as the survivors, first responders and entire Central Florida community. This shooting was the deadliest attack ever directed against the LGBTQ community in U.S. history and is the second-deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history.
