Whip McCarthy Statement on Senate California Water Bill
Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the introduction of Senate legislation regarding California water policy:
“After several years and two House-passed bills, Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer have finally put forth their legislative proposal regarding California water policy. This demonstrates Senate recognition that inaction is no longer a responsible position as our communities go dry and that more needs to be done to help our struggling farmers and families. Our families, farmers, and communities are looking for leadership on this issue that allows them to work and grow the food that feeds our nation. But unfortunately, this proposal disappointingly focuses mainly on treating the symptoms of fallowed fields and dry spigots instead of taking steps toward curing the root of the problem so that our communities can receive more water.
“The problem that must be solved is our communities' ability to capture and store the water that they have contracted and paid for. Last week the House passed legislation that restores a bipartisan 1994 agreement that will achieve that goal. The Senate must take action on California water legislation as quickly as possible. Californians are interested in a serious conversation to end the madness of our man-made water crisis”
