Whip McCarthy Statement on House Passage of the Simple Fairness Act

Mar 5, 2014

Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement regarding House passage of the Simple Fairness Act (H.R. H.R.4118)

“Five months after the disastrous rollout of the President’s healthcare law, Americans across the country are facing steep premium increases, new unaffordable deductibles, canceled plans, reduced wages or work hours and loss of doctors or preferred medical facilities. While millions of Americans are forced to bear the brunt of the law’s failings, many more have been spared, not once but twice, through the President’s decision not to enforce the Employer Mandate provision of the law. Today’s legislation ensures not just some, but all Americans do not have to pay the individual mandate penalty.  This is simply an issue of fairness. Yet, the President and Congressional Democrats don’t see it that way. Their main concern is not for the millions of Americans this law is failing but for their own political self-interests. Today, despite the President’s and House Democratic Leadership’s opposition to this bill, 27 House Democrats joined House Republicans to provide fairness to all Americans. I thank Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) for her work on this crucial piece of legislation, and with this bipartisan vote, I urge Leader Reid to consider this legislation immediately.”
