McCarthy Statement on July Jobs Report

Aug 3, 2012

Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) released the following statement regarding this morning’s employment report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

“July marks the 42nd consecutive month of unemployment above 8 percent – three and a half years with 13 million Americans out of work. This persistently high unemployment and scant economic growth is the direct consequence of President Obama’s and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s failure to lead. Washington Democrats have shown a propensity for election year gimmickry rather than substantive economic policy. As a result, House Republicans have been left without a working partner in our efforts to get Americans back to work.

“Just last week, Senate Democrats passed the President’s massive tax increase – which according to a study by Ernst & Young would cost 710,000 American jobs. Either Washington Democrats believe our economy is doing well enough to raise taxes and they truly do not comprehend what Americans are going through in this faltering economy, or they’re trying to divide Americans against each other in order to score political points.

“A bipartisan majority of the House this week voted to prevent this tax increase and passed critical legislation to reform our tax code – which could add up to 1 million jobs in the first year alone. Struggling American families and small businesses should not have to wait until after an election for their leaders to do their job. It is time for the President and Senate Democrats to get serious, and it is my hope they will soon join our efforts to put our economy on a better path forward.”
