ICYMI: House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy on NBC’s “Meet The Press”

Mar 17, 2013

Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) appeared on NBC’s “Meet The Press with David Gregory” to debate Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) on the budget and economy:

“The President said deficits don’t matter. Well, all of these deficits add up. We are at $16.6 trillion of debt – more than 100% of our GDP. I disagree with what the Democrats are doing. It is the old Washington fiscal game of Jenga. You try to build as much debt as you can take, as much taxes as you can take until you topple the economy. This week, Republican will have a budget that balances in ten years while the Democrats budget never balance. No household can run like that.”

On The President’s Refusal To Confront The Debt And Deficit:

“The President said deficits don’t matter. Well, all of these deficits add up. We are at $16.6 trillion of debt – more than 100% of our GDP. I disagree with what the Democrats are doing. It is the old Washington fiscal game of Jenga. You try to build as much debt as you cant ake, as much taxes as you can take until you topple the economy. This week, Republican will have a budget that balances in ten years while the Democrats budget never balance. No household can run like that.”

On The House Republican Budget Plan To Balance The Budget And Unleash Economic Growth:
“Budgets are blueprints and priorities. We think Obamacare should be repealed, the majority of Americans agree with us. We also think tax reform should happen so we can grow the economy. If you allow these deficits to continue to grow they crowd out the private sector, they crowd out the opportunity for small business to grow. That is why the economy continues to linger. If we are able to balance the budget – which ours does in ten years – you will unshackle America’s growth.”

On The President’s Demand For More Tax Hikes:

“Any viewer that is watching today and working already saw a tax increase. The President took $600 billion out of this economy. He talks about a ‘balanced approach,’ but he never talks about cutting. He raised $600 billion of revenue – money he took from the economy, but he never made any cuts. The President has a different belief than we do. He believes deficits don’t matter – we do. This President has never missed a deadline turning in a March Madness bracket but 4 out of 5 times he missed turning in a budget. There are no new tax increases – you don’t need it. Why do you have to wait? Why does the public have to wait to have a bigger crisis? The longer we wait, they more we add to it [the debt]. There is only one person at this table that voted to raid Medicare – the Republicans did not. We are planning to save Medicare, not only for this generation, but for the future.”

On The Need For The President To Approve The Keystone Pipeline:

“This is the easiest thing to do – it will create 20,000 jobs. It has been out there for three years, this is the challenge. Energy is even in our budget that balances. It puts a new energy perspective in there in that we become energy independent. Think how many jobs that will create. Why do we have to wait? This is common sense, this is an easy one. It isn’t talking about do you have to give more taxes, do you have to do something with social security. Just make the decision and build the Keystone pipeline.”
