Democrats Medicare Plan: Bankruptcy & Benefit Cuts

Jun 28, 2011

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently claimed ObamaCare would preserve and maintain Medicare benefits. She points specifically to the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a regulatory board of 15 unelected bureaucrats, as a key component enacted in ObamaCare to cut Medicare costs.

Sec. Sebelius: ObamaCare Will Keep Medicare Solvent. “Over the past year, we’ve seen two plans to address Medicare’s future finances. One approach, taken in the Affordable Care Act and enhanced by recent deficit reduction proposals from President Barack Obama, brings down underlying costs in the health care system by improving care.” (Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, “IPAB Will Protect Medicare,” Politico – Op-Ed, 6/23/11)

Sec. Sebelius Claims IPAB Will Not Ration Care. “A key part of the president’s plan, the Independent Payment Advisory Board, has recently been the subject of inaccurate claims. Critics say it will ration care and put bureaucrats in charge of the health care system. Nothing could be further from the truth. As this debate continues, it’s important to set the record straight.” (Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, “IPAB Will Protect Medicare,” Politico – Op-Ed, 6/23/11)

Yet, even the Medicare Trustees dispute Secretary Sebelius’ false claims. In testimony last week to the House Ways & Means Committee, Medicare Trustees reiterated that Medicare will be bankrupt in 2024, and that the Democrats’ plan will force “actual” deep benefit cuts.
